Padua girls pile up record 192 points in D1

State Meet Highlights

The Delaware state championships (DIAA) are conducted in two divisions at Caesar Rodney High School. There is a Meet of Champions on Wednesday, May 21. The biggest winners – and the most winners – came from the Padua girls team.

Top Performances:

- Ashley Muschiatti of Padua threw 43-0 to break the D1 meet record in the shot put.

- Maiya Dendy of Padua, a breakout star in 2013 who set all-time state record in the 100, 200 and 400, has been slowed a bit by a hamstring injury this spring. However, she ran 11.81 for US#35 and a huge season's best in the 100 meters and finished second in the 200 and 400 (more on that below).

- Tyra Reid of Caesar Rodney, a senior, was 2-1 head to head against Dendy (see below).

- Ashley Bailey of Middletown broke the D1 record in the girls pole vault with 12-0.

- Kieran Tuntivate of Charter School of Wilmington won the D1 boys 1600 and 3200 and was third in the 800.

- St. George's twins Taronn and Keyjuan Selby share honors as the state's dominant male sprinters. Taronn beat his brother in the 100, 10.73 to 10.74. Then in the 200, Keyjuan beat Taronn 21.62 to 21.97 (wind-aided).

Top Teams:

The Caesar Rodney boys won the Div 1 title on their home track. The bigger story was the Padua girls, who finished top-three in 16 events and broke the state meet scoring record with 192 points. And more than that, Padua moved up this year after winning D2 last year.

Tatnall, a private school with a national brand when it comes to distance running, captured the boys and girls D2 crowns. They boys got a 1-2-3 sweep in the 800 to put an exclamation point on their win.

Top Competition: Padua's Maiya Dendy and Caesar Rodney's Tyra Reid battled for state supremacy in the sprints. Dendy won the 100 in season's best 11.81 with Reid taking second in 11.99. In the 200, Reid got the upper hand with a 24.32 to 24.60 (wind-aided) win. And again in the 400 it was Reid on top with 56.91 to Dendy's 58.08.

Record-breakers: The Padua girls get the recognition, again, for producing one of the best track teams in state history. The Pandas scored in 17 of 18 events, according to the Delaware News Journal. In scoring 192 points, they crushed the D1 record of 135.
